MadgeTech 4 Software: Features and Setup Guide

MadgeTech 4 Software Features and Setup Guide

MadgeTech 4 software is the free Windows programme that sets up, starts, stops and downloads MadgeTech data loggers. Install the software and the USB drivers, connect the logger with an interface cable, choose a start method and reading interval, then download the readings as a graph, data table or statistics report.

What is MadgeTech 4 software?

MadgeTech 4 is the desktop programme that configures MadgeTech data loggers and collects their recorded data. Without it, a logger is a sealed device recording numbers you cannot reach. The software is where you set the device up, pull the readings off it, and turn them into a record you can hand to an auditor.

It is free. MadgeTech 4 Standard comes with every MadgeTech data logger, and updates cost nothing. There is no licence fee and no per-device subscription.

Who makes it and who supplies it in Australia

MadgeTech, Inc. is an American manufacturer that develops both loggers and software. Pacific Sensor Technologies Pty Ltd is the authorised Australian distributor, based in Pakenham, Victoria. Australian buyers download the same software from either site, but local supply, calibration and support come through PST.

Three things happen inside the software:

  • Setting up devices. You choose how often the logger takes a reading, when it starts, when it stops, and what happens if a reading goes out of range.
  • Collecting data. You download readings into the software’s internal file database, where they stay until you delete them.
  • Reporting. You view the data as a graph, a data table or a statistics report, add notes, and export it to Microsoft Excel.

Key point

MadgeTech 4 stores downloaded data in its own file database on your PC. The software will not download the same data twice, and resetting a logger erases its stored readings permanently. Always download and save before you reset a device.

What are the system requirements for MadgeTech 4?

MadgeTech 4 needs Windows 7 or later, .NET Framework 4.8 or 4.8.1, at least 4 GB of RAM and 30 MB of free disk space. Most modern office PCs clear these comfortably. Older machines on a factory floor sometimes do not.

RequirementWhat you need
Operating systemWindows 7 or later. MadgeTech does not guarantee operation on Windows versions Microsoft no longer supports.
.NET FrameworkVersion 4.8 or 4.8.1. Windows 10 (May 2019 update or later) and Windows 11 already include it.
MemoryAt least 4 GB of RAM.
Hard disk spaceAt least 30 MB free for installation, plus room for your saved datasets.
DisplayColour SVGA monitor at 1024 x 768 resolution or better.
PortsAn available USB port for the logger interface cable.

Worth knowing

MadgeTech 4 is Windows only. There is no Mac or Linux version. If your team runs Mac hardware, you will need a Windows machine or a Windows virtual machine to configure and download loggers.

How do you install MadgeTech 4 software?

Install the USB drivers first, then the software, and only connect your interface cable once installation has finished. The whole process takes about five minutes. You can download MadgeTech 4 Standard and the USB interface drivers from our website.

Important

Do not plug in any USB interface cable until the full software installation is complete. Connecting the hardware first is the single most common cause of a logger that Windows later refuses to recognise.

Step by step

  1. Download the software.
  2. Double-click autorun.exe to launch the MadgeTech 4 Installer Options screen.
  3. Click Install USB Interface Drivers first. Click Next when prompted, then wait for the confirmation dialogue.
  4. Click Install MadgeTech 4. Choose your language, then follow the installation wizard.
  5. Click Finish at the Installation Complete screen, then Exit to close the autorun menu.
  6. Now connect your interface cable to a USB port, and connect the logger to the cable or place it in the docking station.
  7. Launch the software from the desktop icon. Your logger should appear in the Connected Devices panel.

Tip

Both the software and the USB drivers must be installed. Installing only the software is a common mistake and leaves the Connected Devices panel permanently empty.

How do you start a MadgeTech data logger?

Select the device in the Connected Devices panel, open the Device tab, then choose a start option from the Control group. MadgeTech 4 offers four start methods, and the right one depends on how many devices you are running and whether you need live readings.

Start methodWhen to use itWhat it does
Custom StartMost jobs, and any new configurationOpens the full settings screen so you can set the reading interval, start method and stop method.
Quick StartRepeat runs with identical settingsStarts immediately using the most recent Custom Start settings. Check the configuration first.
Real Time StartLive monitoring at a desk or benchSends readings straight into the software as they are taken, and updates the report automatically.
Batch StartDeploying many identical loggersProgrammes one device, then starts every matching device automatically as you connect it.

Setting a Custom Start

Custom Start is the option you will use most. It opens the full settings screen, where you choose three things.

  • Start method. Immediate begins recording as soon as you click Start. Delay lets you pick a future date and time. Manual waits for you to trigger the device using the method on its product information card.
  • Reading interval. How often the logger takes a measurement. Shorter intervals give more detail but fill the memory faster.
  • Stop method. Manual, Automatic (a set date and time) or Readings (a set number of readings). You can also enable memory wraparound, which overwrites the oldest readings once memory is full.

Click Start when you are done. The status in the Connected Devices panel changes to Running, Waiting to start or Waiting for manual start, depending on what you chose.

Key point

Manual stop is always available, even when you have set an automatic or readings-based stop. If a device is recording and running in Real Time at the same time, you need to click Stop twice.

Starting several loggers at once

Hold Ctrl or Shift to select multiple devices. The start options only become available if every selected device is the same model. For larger deployments, Batch Start is quicker: programme one logger, then swap devices in and out of the docking station and each matching device starts automatically. Only devices of the same model and firmware can be batch started together, which is worth checking if you are running a mixed fleet of multi-channel loggers alongside single-channel units.

How do you download and view your data?

Select the device, then click Download in the Control group on the Device tab. You can also right-click the device and choose Download. That is the whole process.

Some loggers can be downloaded while still recording. Two conditions apply: the reading interval must be two seconds or slower, and memory wraparound must be disabled. The software asks whether you want to stop the device. Choose No to keep it running.

The three report views

Data can be displayed as a graph, a data table or a statistics report. The reports stay linked, so a change made in one view flows through to the others.

  • Graph. A visual plot over time, with zoom, scaling, annotations and value lines.
  • Data table. Every reading listed with its date and time stamp.
  • Statistics. Calculated values across the dataset, including sterilisation figures such as A0 and F0 where relevant.

Double-clicking a dataset in the Files panel generates a report automatically. You can also set the software to open your preferred report types the moment a download finishes, under File, Options, Display.

Recommendation

Set your report titles to Automatic under File, Options, Reports. The software will then name every report using the model, serial number, device ID and download time. It is a small change that saves a lot of confusion when you have forty datasets in one folder.

Exporting to Excel

Go to the Report tab, then Report Options, then Export to Excel. You can export all data, or use the Timeslice tool to select a window and export only that section.

A few limits are worth knowing. Microsoft Excel 2003 or later is required. Exported data cannot be re-imported into the software. Annotations appear when you print a graph report but do not carry across to Excel. There is no built-in PDF export, so use Print Preview with a PDF printer if you need one.

Which MadgeTech 4 features matter most for compliance?

Alarm rules, the alarm log, annotations and workflows do most of the work. If you are keeping temperature records for food safety, vaccine storage or a quality system, these four features are what turn raw readings into a defensible record. They apply equally whether you are running temperature data loggers in a cool room or a validation kit in a sterilising cycle.

Alarm rules

There are two kinds. Device alarm rules live on the logger itself, set under Device Properties on the Alarm tab. You set a high and low threshold, optional warning thresholds, and a delay so a brief door opening does not trigger an alert.

Software alarm rules only work when a device is running in Real Time and connected to the software. Open Manage Rules in the Alarms group. Rules can fire when all conditions are met or when any condition is met, and can send email notifications, or text messages via email, once the email server settings are configured.

Supporting information

Software alarm rules need the PC running and the logger connected. If you need alarms that work when nobody is at the computer, look at MadgeTech Cloud Services or a wireless data logger system instead.

The alarm log and acknowledgements

The Alarm Log records every alarm the software has seen. You can dismiss an alarm, or acknowledge it, which is the more useful option. Acknowledging lets you add a title and a comment explaining what you did about the breach. The software then places an annotation on the graph at the exact point the alarm fired, with your comment attached.

For recurring issues, set up comment templates under File, Options, Alarms. This gives you a consistent record of the corrective action taken, which is exactly what an auditor asks for.

Annotations and cooling flags

Annotations attach notes to a graph or to a single reading. Only one annotation can be added per reading. They stay with the saved report and are visible when you print.

Cooling flags are automatic annotations that mark the graph when readings cross temperature thresholds you define. If you are recording a cooking and cooling cycle, this saves reading the graph by eye to find the moment each threshold was crossed. You can name the thresholds and save your settings as the default.

Workflows

A workflow is a saved set of instructions telling the software to perform tasks when conditions are met. You can schedule tasks for specific dates and times, or trigger them when particular loggers are connected. Download the data, generate the report, save it to the right folder, all without anyone remembering to click anything.

Important

The MadgeTech software must be running for a scheduled workflow to execute. A workflow will not run if the programme is closed or the PC is asleep.

Value lines and Mean Kinetic Temperature

A value line is a horizontal reference line drawn across a graph report. There are five types: Minimum, Maximum, Average, Mean Kinetic Temperature (MKT) and Fixed Value.

Mean Kinetic Temperature is a single figure expressing the overall effect of temperature variation on a product over time. It is widely used in pharmaceutical storage because it weights short warm excursions more heavily than a plain average does. A fixed value line is the simplest and often the most useful: draw a line at your maximum allowable temperature and every breach becomes obvious at a glance.

Value lines convert automatically when you change units. A line set at 0 degrees Celsius becomes 32 degrees Fahrenheit if you switch the graph units, and calculated lines recalculate as new real time data arrives.

MadgeTech 4 Standard or Secure: which do you need?

Most Australian businesses need the Standard version, which is free. MadgeTech 4 Secure is a paid product for regulated pharmaceutical and medical device environments, adding electronic signatures, access codes, a secure data file and an audit trail.

Recommendation

Start with Standard. It is free and does everything a food business, cold storage operator or general industrial user needs. Move to Secure only if a regulator or client audit specifically requires electronic signatures and an audit trail. Talk to our team first, because Secure is not compatible with every logger.

Common setup problems and how to fix them

Most MadgeTech 4 support calls come down to missing USB drivers, an unclaimed wireless device, or a reading interval that is too fast for Real Time. The table below covers the usual suspects. Device-specific steps are in the user guides, and older devices sometimes need a firmware update.

ProblemLikely cause and fix
Logger does not appear in Connected DevicesThe USB drivers were not installed, or the cable was plugged in before installation finished. Reinstall the drivers from the autorun menu, then click Refresh Devices.
Wireless logger is missing from the listIt has not been claimed. Untick “Only show claimed wireless devices” in the Connected Devices panel, select the device, then click Claim in the Wireless group.
Cannot start Real Time on a running deviceReal Time requires the device to be physically connected, wraparound disabled, and a reading interval of two seconds or slower.
Download While Recording is unavailableSame conditions apply: reading interval of two seconds or slower, and memory wraparound disabled.
Data will not download a second timeBy design. The software will not download the same data more than once.
Wireless device stopped responding after a channel changeEvery connected RFC1000 transceiver must be set to the same wireless channel as the device.
Alarm emails are not arrivingThe email server address, port and authentication settings need configuring under File, Options, Email Settings.

Tip

If panels have been dragged out of place, reset the whole layout under File, Options, Display, then Reset screen layout. It is faster than rearranging panels by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Is MadgeTech 4 software free?
Yes. MadgeTech 4 Standard is free and comes with any MadgeTech data logger, and updates are free to download. MadgeTech 4 Secure is a separate paid product.
No. MadgeTech 4 is Windows-only and requires Windows 7 or later. Mac users need a Windows machine or a Windows virtual machine to configure and download loggers.
Yes. Both must be installed. Install the USB drivers first, then the software, and only connect your interface cable once installation is finished. Skipping the drivers is the most common reason a logger does not appear.
MadgeTech 4 Standard is currently version 4.3.1.1, and MadgeTech 4 Secure is version 4.2.18.0. Check the download page before installing, as versions change.
Yes. Use Export to Excel in the Report Options group on the Report tab. Microsoft Excel 2003 or later is required. Exported data cannot be re-imported, and annotations do not carry across.
On many devices, yes. The reading interval must be two seconds or slower and memory wraparound must be disabled. When you click Download, choose No when asked whether to stop the device.
The Standard version does not. MadgeTech 4 Secure includes electronic signatures, access codes, a secure data file and an audit trail, and is designed to help meet 21 CFR Part 11 requirements. IQ/OQ/PQ protocols are included with purchase.
MadgeTech recommends annual calibration at minimum. While the software allows self-calibration, an accredited laboratory is the better choice for any logger supporting food safety, vaccine storage or a quality system.
