What is a Thermocouple Probe?

A thermocouple probe is a temperature sensor made from two dissimilar metallic conductors joined at a measurement junction. When the junction is exposed to heat or cold, it generates a small electromotive force (EMF) — a voltage directly proportional to temperature. This principle, known as the Seebeck effect, makes thermocouples one of the most versatile, durable, and cost-effective temperature measurement solutions in industrial and scientific applications.

At Pacific Sensor Technologies, we stock over 30 thermocouple probe models available ex-stock, with next-day delivery to metro areas across Australia. We also manufacture custom thermocouple probes to suit your exact application — from automotive and food processing to pharmaceutical validation and high-temperature furnace monitoring.
Looking for a display or logging device rather than a bare sensor? See our Thermocouple Thermometers range for handheld meters and data loggers that pair with these probes.

  • Thermocouple Probes for Every Application

A thermocouple probe is the physical sensor assembly that houses a thermocouple junction inside a protective sheath — ready to insert into a process, clamp onto a surface, or connect straight to a meter or data logger. Pacific Sensor Technologies stocks over 30 thermocouple probe types ex-stock: immersion probes for liquids, gels and air (e.g. TP-K02), surface probes for pipes and flat surfaces (TP-K03, TP-K05), piercing probes for food and process penetration (TP-K04), and magnetic probes for quick attach/detach on metal surfaces up to 480°C. Every probe is available in Type K, J, T or E, with cable lengths, sheath materials and termination styles built to order. If you’re not sure which thermocouple probe type suits your application, call 1300 662 720 or see our probe selection guide below.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature range do thermocouple probes cover?

It depends on the thermocouple type. Type K thermocouples cover -200°C to +1,260°C, making them suitable for the vast majority of industrial applications. Type T covers -200°C to +350°C (ideal for cryogenic use), while Type J covers 0°C to +750°C. All probe types are listed on individual product pages.

What is the difference between Type K, J, T, and E thermocouples?

Each thermocouple type uses a different pair of metallic alloys, giving it a unique temperature range, accuracy, and sensitivity. Type K (Chromel/Alumel) is the most popular general-purpose sensor. Type J (Iron/Constantan) suits older equipment. Type T (Copper/Constantan) is preferred for food and laboratory use. Type E (Chromel/Constantan) offers the highest sensitivity of the base-metal types.

Can I get a custom thermocouple probe made in Australia?

Yes. Pacific Sensor Technologies manufactures custom thermocouple probes with fast turnaround times. You can specify probe type, sheath material, insertion length, cable type, and termination style. Contact us on 1300 662 720 or email sales@pacificsensortech.com.au for a free quote.

Do you stock thermocouples for next-day delivery in Australia?

Yes. We maintain ex-stock inventory of our most popular thermocouple probes. Next-day delivery is available to metropolitan areas across Australia. Call 1300 662 720 to confirm stock and delivery timelines to your postcode.

    Are your thermocouples NATA certified?

Pacific Sensor Technologies operates a NATA-accredited calibration laboratory. We can supply NATA-calibration certificates for thermocouple probes used in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, and life sciences.

Can thermocouple probes be used with data loggers?
