  • How to Choose the Right pH Probe

Selecting the correct pH electrode for your application comes down to five key factors:

    1. Junction Type
Single junction electrodes are suitable for most clean laboratory samples. Double junction electrodes are preferred when measuring samples that could contaminate the reference electrolyte — such as protein-rich solutions, heavy metals, or strongly coloured samples.
    2. Filling Type
Gel-filled electrodes require no maintenance and are ideal for portable meters and routine use. Refillable electrodes offer greater accuracy and longer service life but require periodic topping up of the reference electrolyte.
    3. Body Material
Glass body electrodes provide the highest accuracy. Epoxy body electrodes are more rugged and suited to industrial field use where breakage is a risk.
    4. Connector Type
Most laboratory pH meters use BNC connectors. Process and data logging applications may require amplified probes with specific cable connectors.
    5. Application Environment
For outdoor and environmental monitoring, select an IP-rated submersible probe. For continuous process monitoring, choose an amplified combination probe with temperature compensation.

    Types of pH Electrodes

Modern pH measurement uses combination electrodes that integrate both the measuring and reference half-cells into a single probe body. Here are the main types:

Type Construction Best For Example Products
Single Junction, Gel-Filled Sealed gel electrolyte, one junction Lab samples, clean aqueous solutions MA913B, MA991B
Double Junction, Gel-Filled Two-junction barrier prevents contamination Protein, heavy metal, or coloured samples SE220, MA911B/2
Single Junction, Refillable Glass Replenishable electrolyte, glass body High accuracy lab measurements MA916B
Double Junction, Refillable Glass Max contamination resistance + refillable Industrial process, wastewater MA917B, MA918B, MA919B
Amplified Combination Probe Integrated pH/ORP/Temp sensor + preamp Data loggers, continuous monitoring MA914BR, MA923D
Rugged Submersible IP-rated epoxy body, tethered cable Outdoor, environmental, field use MadgeTech pH-Rugged

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a pH probe and a pH electrode?

The terms are used interchangeably in most contexts. Technically, a pH electrode refers to the glass measuring element, while a pH probe often describes the complete assembly including the body, junction, cable, and connector. All products on this page are complete combination probes ready for immediate use.

How long do pH probes last?

Lifespan varies by type and usage. Gel-filled electrodes typically last 12–18 months with regular use. Refillable glass electrodes can last 2–5 years when properly maintained and stored in the correct electrode storage solution. Rugged epoxy probes in industrial environments typically last 1–3 years.

How do I calibrate a pH probe?

pH probes should be calibrated before each use or at a minimum daily for critical measurements. Use standard buffer solutions at pH 4.01, 7.00, and 10.0. Pacific Sensor Tech stocks a full range of calibration solutions, and our NATA-accredited calibration service can verify your probe against traceable standards.

Are these pH probes compatible with my pH meter?

All probes with a BNC connector are compatible with any pH meter or data logger that has a BNC input — including all Milwaukee Instruments meters and MadgeTech data loggers. The amplified probes (MA914BR/1, MA923D/1) require a compatible Milwaukee meter. Contact our team on 1300 662 720 if you need compatibility confirmation.

Can I use these probes for environmental / wastewater monitoring?

Yes. The MadgeTech pH-Rugged Electrode is specifically designed for submersible outdoor environmental monitoring. The double junction electrodes in our Milwaukee range are also well-suited to wastewater and process water applications where contamination of the reference junction is a concern.

Do you offer pH probe calibration services in Australia?

Yes. Pacific Sensor Tech operates a NATA-accredited calibration laboratory in Pakenham, Victoria. We offer on-site calibration services across Australia and return calibration via our repair and calibration portal. Contact us for a quote.
