Handheld optical models (MR-series ATC, $125 each) read a scale through an eyepiece against natural light — the practical choice for field testing and incoming-goods checks on a tighter budget.
A refractometer measures the refractive index of a liquid — that is, how much the liquid bends light passing through it. Because concentration affects how light bends, a refractometer can quickly determine the concentration of dissolved substances such as sugars (Brix), salts (salinity), or other solutes. Results are typically displayed in Brix, RI (refractive index), or specific gravity.
Digital refractometers (our Milwaukee MA-series) display an instant numeric reading on an LCD screen with automatic temperature compensation. Handheld optical models (our MR-series) are read by eye against a scale through an eyepiece — more affordable and just as accurate, but requiring good natural light and a steady hand.

Both measure dissolved solids by refractive index, but on different scales. Brix (°Bx) reads directly as % sucrose by weight and is the standard for sugar, fruit and juice testing. Baumé (°Bé) is a density-based scale traditionally used in winemaking to estimate potential alcohol. MA883 reads Baumé directly; MA884 and MA885 read both scales.
A Brix reading alone only tells you sugar concentration, not alcohol. MA884 and MA885 combine a Brix scale with a potential-alcohol scale specifically for must and wort testing at different fermentation stages — these are the models to choose for wine/beer work, not a plain Brix refractometer.
Yes — refractometers should be zero-calibrated with distilled water before use and periodically checked against a known calibration standard. All models include ATC (automatic temperature compensation) to correct for sample temperature, but this doesn't replace periodic zero calibration.
